Kinetic Sculpture "Neuron" To Be Dedicated Friday, April 21 At Fallis Elementary School

Artist Robert Pietruszewski has completed installation of a major new kinetic sculpture, "Neuron," on the grounds of Fallis Elementary School (6700 E. Virginia Ave.) This stainless steel sculpture, standing 27 feet tall and 18 feet in diameter, includes 24 moving elements rotating on 15 separate axes. The complex yet graceful movement of the work is powered entirely by wind. The dedication ceremony will take place on Friday, April 21 at 1:30 p.m.

"The science curriculum of Fallis Elementary inspired a thematic approach to the work," said Pietruszewski. "The neuron was chosen as a starting point for the design because of its dramatic structure as a building block of the brain. There were some interesting challenges involving the spatial mapping of the moving elements that ultimately led to a compound interplay of the components."

"Neuron" is the latest in a series of kinetic sculptures commissioned by Denver Public Schools completed by the artist. Other works are on display at Gilpin, Columbian, Hallet, and Columbine elementary schools.

Artist Robert Pietruszewski is a Fulbright Fellow with a degree in fine art from the University of Wisconsin. His sculptural work has been on display in many of the finest museums throughout the world.
