Denver Public Schools Responds To RTD Strike

Since 2004, Denver Public Schools has relied on RTD for bus transportation of its high school students. Out of 18,000 high school students, 2,300 purchased monthly passes in March.

"Knowing that the RTD strike could compromise our students' ability to attend school, DPS is providing several other options," said Superintendent Michael Bennet. "We are all going to have to be very inventive to work through this disruption."

Students may use a Transportation Department process that allows them to ride district buses on a space-available basis. This process could help students with transportation to an elementary or middle school that is close to their high school. Application forms are linked from the main DPS web page, www.dpsk12.org. Families may also obtain forms at each high school; in the Welcome Center at the DPS administration building (900 Grant St.); or by calling the Transportation Hotline at (303) 825-2611.

Students may also inquire at every high school about space availability on buses that transport students with disabilities. Many of these buses have space available, and may be useful for all or part of the transportation to and from school.

DPS staff is contacting all high school principals to discuss alternative strategies for dealing with absenteeism. A recorded message will be sent tonight via automatic calls to all high school parents and students, reminding them that attendance is required. The Transportation Dept Hotline (303-825-2611) and Welcome Center (720-423-3970) will have up to date information and can assist students and parents with finding other options.

RTD is currently operating about half of its regular bus schedule. Information about routes during the strike can be found at the RTD web site (www.rtd-denver.com) or by calling 303-299-6000. Students should allow extra time for commuting to school or make other arrangements. Students who need help navigating the current RTD system may also call the DPS Department of Transportation Hotline at 303-825-2611. Since 2004, the District has reduced its fleet by 50 buses. DPS Department of Transportation Executive Director Guy Champlin said the district does not have the buses or drivers to add routes at this time.
