Board Of Education Names Three New Buildings - Florida Pitt Waller School, Farrell B. Howell School, William R. (Bill) Roberts School
The Board of Education yesterday (Thursday, March 16) approved names for three new schools set to open in August in fast-growing northeast Denver.
The Board selected:
- Florida Pitt Waller School for the new K-8 facility opening at 21601 E. 51st Place in Green Valley Ranch. Florida Pitt Waller was a pioneering educator in Denver Public Schools. She was the first African American school librarian, the first African American Instructional Coordinator and first African American principal. She served at Gilpin, Barrett, Columbine and Force elementary schools.
- Farrell B. Howell School for the new K-8 facility at 4250 E. Albrook Dr. in Montbello. Farrell Howell was a Denver Public Schools teacher, coach and principal from 1964-1995 of Native American heritage. He was principal of Hill and Grant middle schools, was very active with the Denver Indian Center and was a commission member of the Colorado Commission of Indian Affairs.
- William "Bill" Roberts School for the new K-8 facility at 2100 Akron St. Mr. Roberts was a former employee of Denver Parks and Recreation, Director of Public Works, Deputy Mayor, Denver City Councilman and Denver Water Board member and president. Mr. Roberts was one of the first supporters of moving the airport from Stapleton to its new site, Denver International Airport.
In other highlights of the meeting, the Board:
- Approved a resolution recognizing Maruca Salazar as recipient of the Mayor's Awards for Excellence in the Arts.
- Approved a policy on Student Academic Achievement that establishes the Board's "core beliefs" including: All students will learn at grade level or higher and reach their full potential. No excuses; High quality teaching will drive student achievement; Accountability for performance at all levels of the system; Provide intentional, positive culture where every adult serves an important role; Include parents and the community as valued partners to ensure student achievement.
- A motion renewing the Skyland Community High School Charter School under set terms and conditions, including submission of a satisfactory school improvement plan by May 15.
