Schools Celebrate Read Across America, 102nd Birthday Of Dr. Seuss This Week
Schools throughout Denver will celebrate "Read Across America" this week to focus the country's attention on how important it is to motivate children to read in addition to helping them master basic skills. The nationwide reading celebration takes place each year on March 2, the birthday of beloved children's author Dr. Seuss (Theodor Geisel, who was born on March 2, 1904). Here are just some of the events planned:
THURSDAY, MARCH 2
LOWRY ELEMENTARY SCHOOL: Lowry Elementary School will host a "Green Eggs and Ham Breakfast" from 7:15 to 8 a.m. Thursday, March 2 at the school. Teachers and staff will ask students and parents trivia questions related to Dr. Seuss books. Prizes will be awarded to students with correct answers!

KNIGHT FUNDAMENTAL ACADEMY: Fifth-grade students at Knight Fundamental Academy will share an afternoon of reading, Dr. Seuss stovepipe hats and birthday cake with friends, family and city officials from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. Thursday, March 2.
A magnet school, Knight's emphasis is focused on the back-to-basics fundamental approach, a disciplined learning environment, and required, active parental involvement. Students are expected to perform at or above grade level. Daily homework assignments help improve study skills, and mandatory uniforms help students focus on the building blocks of education - reading, mathematics, research skills, grammar and composition. High expectations from the beginning are set for students and parents.

WYMAN ELEMENTARY SCHOOL: Wyman Elementary School will celebrate Dr. Seuss's birthday throughout the day on Thursday, March 2. Children will be read to by volunteers from the DPS Board of Education, the Colorado Lawyers' Committee, St. John's Cathedral, Central Presbyterian Church and Wyman's extended educational community. For another treat, Wyman principal Delores Manns-Martin will serve birthday cake to all the students during lunch.

STEDMAN ELEMENTARY SCHOOL: Throughout the day on Thursday, March 2 Stedman Elementary School will celebrate Dr. Seuss's birthday with the help of readers from around the district. Every class will visit the library to hear a Dr. Seuss book and learn all about his life. Throughout the day each class will have a celebratory party with Seuss activities and goodies. Thanks to all our visiting readers! We love Dr. Seuss!

FORCE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL: It's Pajama Night at Force Elementary School starting at 6 p.m. Thursday, March 2 in celebration of Read Across America and Dr. Seuss's birthday. The Force Roadrunners will be showing up in their pajamas. The evening celebration will include cake and ice cream, balloons and door prizes. Parents and students will participate in a book fair, informational sessions and Seuss Reading Time. Responses have been very high with over 400 reservations.

FRIDAY, MARCH 3
DEL PUEBLO ELEMENTARY SCHOOL: Del Pueblo Elementary School will celebrate Read Across America from 1 to 3 p.m. Friday, March 3. This event focuses attention on how important it is to motivate children to read and master basic skills through the joy of reading Dr. Seuss books. Students will listen to readers read Dr. Seuss books, eat birthday cake and some will even get to wear Cat in the Hat costumes!
Some of the readers will include former Denver Bronco Reggie Rivers; Division Chief Nick Nuanes from the Denver Fire Department; Denver Classroom Teachers Association President Kim Ursetta; Colorado Education Association Executive Director David DuVall; Sgt. Ernie Martinez from Denver Police Department; Happy Haynes, Assistant Superintendent for Community Relations, Denver Public Schools; Northwest Area Superintendent John Youngquist; DPS Board of Education President Theresa Pena; Community Member Manolo Gonzales-Estay; librarians from the Byers Library; Salazar Family Foundation President Lola Salazar; Board Members from the Latin American Education Foundation and other firefighters and police officers from the City and County of Denver.
