Denver Middle School Students To Compete In Metro Mathcounts Competition On Saturday, Feb. 11; Qualifiers Advance To State Competition

More than 65 sixth, seventh and eighth graders from seven Denver schools are scheduled to compete at the metro area Mathcounts competition from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 11 at the University of Denver.

Mathcounts is a national competition designed to stimulate sixth, seventh and eighth graders' interest and ability in mathematics. Coached by teachers or volunteers, students prepare by studying math concepts. The emphasis is on expanding math knowledge and learning how to analyze and approach problems.

Students participate in the metro competition in an attempt to advance to the state and national competitions. Qualifying students this Saturday will advance to the state competition set for Saturday, March 19 at the University of Denver. The national competition is May 11 to 14 in Arlington, Va.

Nationally, over 500,000 participate at the school level and approximately 30,000 at local competitions.
