Skinner Middle School's Fifth Annual Community Night Is Wednesday, Feb. 8 To Showcase Arts Programming
Skinner Middle School will host its fifth annual community night, showcasing the school's new integrated arts focus, on Wednesday, Feb. 8 from 5to 8 p.m.
There will be displays throughout the school, showing how the arts are being integrated in all academic subject areas. Performances will include the Skinner Middle School dance team, a shadow drama of "House on Mango Street" by sixth graders and coral reef displays. Skinner's own renowned artist and teacher Ms. Deanza will display student art work and show all the beginnings of the "Cows in schools/mini-moo's" project, sponsored by the Larimer Arts Association. Students will be fundraising and selling Skinner Middle School T-shirts, sweatshirts and hats.
The following community based organizations and local artists will be on hand giving information about their services and activities: Regis University, Mile High Girl Scouts, Primary Dental, John Pacheco (School Resource Officer), Girls Inc., Tennyson Fire Department, Junior Achievement, Rita Wallace (doll making), Arlette Lucero (Valentine's), Lobassy (marbeling), Conflict Center, Earthforce, Clinica Tepayac, Denver Workforce, Mile High Youth Corp., Child Health Plan, Thriving Communities, Veronica Herrera (bead pins) and Gloria Vialapando (coil clay pots).
North High School representatives will feature information about various programs and activities: Kevin Marlatt (computer magnet program), athletic programs (softball, football, girls'/boys' soccer, girls' basketball and wrestling club) and teacher Fawn Atencio (drawing, painting and jewelry). Denver Public School Food and Nutrition Services will also hand out food samples and information about nutrition. Refreshments are provided.
Skinner Middle School is one of 12 schools this year to roll out new programs, thanks to $2.5 million from Denver voters to identify attractive educational programs and increase student enrollment in neighborhood schools. At Skinner, the revitalization process is leading to full implementation of the district's studio literacy and connected math programs; continued professional development of the district's secondary teaching and learning project; development of accelerated options in selected content areas; and implementation of AVID (Achievement Via Individual Determination) programming. Skinner also is launching integrated arts and artistic focus areas, with every Skinner teacher and administrator engaged in the Young Audiences "Aesthetic Arts Institute."
Skinner Middle School is located at 3435 W. 40 Ave.
