Denver Students Are Winners At Scholastic Art And Writing Awards
Over $130,000 in scholarship money was awarded to students at the Scholastic Art and Writing Awards on Sunday, Jan. 29 at the Gates Concert Hall in the Newman Center at the University of Denver.
Denver School of the Arts (DSA) senior Patricio Chavez won a scholarship from the Art Students League, DSA senior Brittany Olson won a scholarship from the Colorado Art Education Association and East High School senior Christina Galindo won a scholarship from the Colorado Writing Project for her entry.
Brittany Olson and Karl Poulson, a junior from DSA, were named as American Vision Award Nominees as "Best of Show" Recommendations.
In addition, over 500 students received Gold Keys, Silver Keys or Honorable Mentions for their outstanding work. All Gold Key work is sent to New York City for the national competition.
Gold Key winners in Denver included students from Denver School of the Arts and Montbello High School. There were Silver Key awards given to students from George Washington High School, South High School and Denver School of the Arts. North High School, George Washington High School, Denver School of the Arts, and Hill Middle School Campus of Arts & Sciences had winners in the Honorable Mention category.
Scholastic Art and Writing Awards are the largest national creative competition among American teenagers, conferring recognition to our nation's emerging young artists and writers.
M.R. Robinson, the founder of Scholastic, Inc., founded the Awards in 1923. All winning entries are on display at the Museum of Outdoor Arts, The Englewood Public Library and the second floor atrium of the Englewood Civic Center, 1000 Englewood Parkway, through Tuesday, Feb. 7.
