Morey Middle School Student Wins Metro Mathcounts Competition; Morey Team Finishes Third Overall And Moves To State Round; Slavens School Student Also Advances

Jordan Shelton, Beau Brown, Meagan Swisher and Metro MathCounts Champion Tom Roberts will represent Morey Middle School at the state MathCounts Competition on Saturday, March 18 at the Colorado School of Mines in Golden. Tom, Jordan and Beau are eighth-grade students; Meagan is a seventh-grader.

In order to advance to state, Morey competed in the Metro Denver Math Counts Competition on Saturday Feb. 11 and posted some stellar results. Out of 50 teams, Morey captured third place, with an amazing 10 out of 10 on the team round.

Tom Roberts finished in first place individually with a perfect score in the first two rounds and then an exciting countdown round finish, which he won three points to two. Tom's competitor answered the deciding question first, but was incorrect. Tom stayed cool, and calmly took the championship with the correct answer. Beau Brown took 23rd overall, and Jordan Shelton finished 29th out of 372 competitors.

Slavens School also competed in the Metro MathCounts competition. Kosuke Yoshinaga, a seventh-grade student at Slavens, finished 26th out of 375 students and advances as an individual to the state competition.

Congratulations to all of the DPS students who competed in the Metro MathCounts competition and good luck to the DPS competitors at the state round.
