Steele Elementary School Students Will Team Up With Great Harvest Bread Co. Of Denver On Sunday, Feb. 26 To Help Fight Obesity And Feed Homeless Students
Steele Elementary School students will team up with Great Harvest Bread Co. of Denver to help fight the obesity epidemic in youth and raise money for homeless students by helping customers from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 26 at the Great Harvest Bread Co. of Denver at Belcaro Center (765 S. Colorado Blvd.).
On this special Sunday, seven Great Harvests in the Rocky Mountain region will bake tons of their number-one selling bread, the 100 percent whole grain honey whole wheat, and open their doors from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. to customers. On this day, 100 percent of sales will be donated to a local elementary school partnered to fund nutrition education.
Steele Elementary School is one of the seven schools. Other schools participating in the event include: Hackberry Hill Elementary School in Arvada, Douglas Elementary School in Boulder, Frontier Elementary School in Colorado Springs, Devinny Elementary School in Lakewood, Indian Peaks Elementary School in Longmont and an elementary school in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
Customers can buy loaves and donate them to the Denver Public Schools Educational Outreach Program, which aids homeless DPS students in a variety of ways. One important function of the program is to help feed students in need. Nearly 800 homeless students have been identified this year in DPS. Money raised will be used to help provide school clothes and supplies, field trips, school Id's, gym uniforms, graduation expenses and activity fees.
Families with children are the fastest growing segment of the homeless population. The Denver Public Schools Educational Outreach Program's main goal is to help meet some of these basic needs so that children can use education as their main defense against the perpetual cycle of poverty. Homeless youth are faced with various obstacles and challenges that make it very difficult for them to attend school on a regular basis. Twenty percent of all homeless children do not attend school, and 21 percent of the children who do attend school have to repeat a grade because of frequent absences. By providing clothing, food, shelter and medical supplies, the Educational Outreach Program helps to remove some of the barriers that prevent homeless children and youth from receiving equal educational opportunities.
Steele Elementary School is located at 320 S. Marion St. The telephone number is 303-744-1717.
