Brain Bowl At Thomas Jefferson High School Is Saturday, Feb. 4

Almost 100 teams of middle school students will compete in a regional Brain Bowl competition at Thomas Jefferson High School (3950 S. Holly St.) on Saturday, Feb. 4.

The competition is a challenging and fun opportunity for students in sixth, seventh and eighth grades to participate in a fast-paced general knowledge competition that promotes teamwork and enthusiasm for academics. Topics include math, science, history, literature, art, geography and more. Brain Bowl provides a framework for students to expand their classroom learning by using analysis, application, knowledge and comprehension skills.

Teams pull their specialties and interests as they submit their answers to a variety of subjects in a written round and in four "head-to-head" rounds. In the head-to-head rounds, each team is matched against another team of the same grade level. Teams try to be the first to ring the buzzer and correctly answer questions. Teams are re-matched after each block of 30 questions. The teams' written and oral round scores are then ranked and the top eight teams in each grade level compete in the elimination rounds. The final rounds will determine the winning teams for each grade. Students on the first, second, third and fourth place teams will receive medals and all of the first-place teams will receive a trophy for their school.

Morning rounds are from 8:30 to 11:20 a.m. The schedule for afternoon elimination rounds is:

The 2006 Brain Bowl is presented by the Colorado and Wyoming Optimists Clubs in cooperation with the University of Denver College of Education, Denver Public Schools and Boulder Valley Schools.
