"Success" Is Theme Of February Edition Of "DPS Today" Television Show
The February 2006 edition of "DPS Today," the monthly television show about Denver Public Schools on Denver cable 8, takes a close-up look at one teacher and two schools with upbeat news on academic achievement.
The show features:
An interview with Harrington Elementary School teacher Rene Wilson and student Benito Castillo. Wilson's students last year were 100 percent proficient or advanced on the mathematics portion of CSAP, the Colorado Student Assessment Program. The perfect score far outstrips the state and district averages and it was produced by students in a school with a poverty rate above 90 percent.
An interview with Beach Court Elementary School principal Frank Roti. Beach Court Elementary School moved up this year to an average rating on the state's School Accountability Reports. By doing so, Beach Court pulled off a rare feat. Among the 73 regular elementary schools in the district, Beach Court is one of only three that has a poverty rate above 80 percent and that also has achieved the "average" ranking.
An interview with Slavens School principal Greta Martinez. The students in grades six through eight at Slavens moved up an excellent rating on the School Accountability Report, matching the rank given its elementary students. The state scores such K-8 schools twice, ranking the elementary group with one score and the middle school years with another score. The excellent rank for Slavens represents the first time in Denver that a group of sixth, seventh and eighth graders has achieved the state's highest ranking.
"DPS Today" can be seen on Denver cable 8 throughout the month at 8 a.m. every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday; at 8:30 p.m. every Friday and Saturday; and at 1:30 p.m. every Sunday.
