Second Annual Minds Matter Fundraiser With Guest Speaker Superintendent Michael Bennet Is Friday, Feb. 3 At Marriott City Center Downtown

Superintendent Michael Bennet will speak at a fundraiser for Minds Matter of Denver on Friday, Feb. 3 at the Marriott City Center in downtown Denver.

Minds Matter expands opportunities and educational horizons for highly motivated students with limited financial resources, serving as an advocate for students who are looking to continue their education at the college level. This year six new sophomores and eight continuing juniors are involved in the program currently at North High School (2960 N. Speer Blvd). Some of the students have participated in a summer program at prestigious colleges around the country, including University of Southern California, Putney School in Vermont and the University of Colorado at Boulder. The students participated in a wide variety of curricula from architecture, to film studies, to oceanography.

Two mentors work with each student at a weekly after-school meeting for three hours. The goals of these sessions are: to help students apply to summer college preparatory programs; develop essay writing, critical thinking and presentation skills; help with financial aid applications; and learn techniques to excel at college entrance exams.

The Minds Matter organization is entirely volunteer run, relying on donations from the community to fund and support its efforts. There are 28 mentors and three back-up mentors this year, all from the Denver professional community.

The Feb. 3 fundraiser at the Marriott City Center Downtown (1701 California St.) will include keynote speaker Superintendent Michael Bennet, a cocktail hour, dinner and a casino night with silent auction. Individual tickets are still available for $80 each by contacting Grace Markley at Minds Matter.
