Schools Host Information Nights And Open Houses Leading Up To Jan. 31 "Choice Enrollment" Deadline For 2006-2007 School Year
Now is the time to begin enrolling students for the 2006-2007 school year. School information nights and open houses are underway (see list that follows enrollment information).
DPS offers a wide variety of choices including neighborhood schools, magnets, charters and other schools and gifted programs for kindergarten through eighth-grade students with extraordinary academic needs, abilities and potential. (Note that the application deadline for middle and high school magnet programs and gifted programs for kindergarten through eighth-grade students was Dec. 9, 2005.)
CHOICE ENROLLMENT PERIOD IS THIS MONTH
The month of January is the first round of Choice enrollment, which allows families to apply for a transfer to a neighborhood school outside the one in their own neighborhood.
Choice enrollment forms are available at all schools; completed forms for the 2006-2007 school year need to be returned to any school by Tuesday, Jan. 31 for central processing. A lottery will be conducted if there are more applicants than space available in a school. Families will receive acceptance letters by mid-February.
After Jan. 31, families need to apply directly to the specific school or schools that interest them. These applications may be completed through Thursday, Aug. 31. Students are enrolled during this second round of the Choice process on a first-come, first-served basis after the first round applicants have been placed. Waiting lists are maintained for schools with more applicants than space available.
ELEMENTARY SCHOOL MAGNET APPLICATION DEADLINE IS JAN. 31

TRANSPORTATION AND THE CHOICE ENROLLMENT PROCESS
Transportation to another neighborhood school is not provided through the Choice enrollment process. Transportation to magnet schools is provided in most cases. If your child attends a Title I school that has been rated unsatisfactory, you have the option to enroll in another school in the district, and transportation may be provided through an application process. Applications are mailed home to qualifying students. In all other cases, you must provide your own transportation through the Choice process.
