Knight Fundamental Academy Displays Student Art At U.S. Bank, Cherry Creek

Fifth-grade students from Knight Fundamental Academy are displaying six sculptures at the U.S. Bank branch located at 200 University Blvd. in Cherry Creek. The sculptures were created as a part of collaboration with artist Jeff Starr and the Denver Museum of Contemporary Art (MCA).

Students, under the supervision of Knight art teacher Thom Padick, visited the Dikeou Collection of contemporary art (a collection under management of the museum) following a lecture on the differences between Modern Art and Contemporary Art presented by MCA educational outreach coordinator Jennifer Crawford. The field trip was followed by a two-session clay sculpture workshop held at Knight and led by Mr. Starr, an exhibitor in the MCA's recent Biennial Blowout exhibition.

All the student sculptures are clay portraits (head and shoulders). The works are fired clay painted with acrylic paint. The sculptures will be on display at least through Wednesday, Feb. 15.

The program was funded by the Denver Public Schools Distance Learning Network, MCA, U.S. Bank, SCFD and by Knight students and their families. The work will be on display during normal bank lobby hours in conjunction with a piece by Starr.

A magnet school, Knight's emphasis is focused on the back-to-basics fundamental approach, a disciplined learning environment, and required, active parental involvement. Students are expected to perform at or above grade level. Daily homework assignments help improve study skills, and mandatory uniforms help students focus on the building blocks of education - reading, mathematics, research skills, grammar and composition. High expectations from the beginning are set for students and parents. Knight Fundamental Academy is located at 3245 E. Exposition Ave. The phone number is 303-722-4681.
