"Mathletics" Second Round Winners Announced; District-Wide Contest Is Saturday, Jan. 21 To Qualify For Metro "Mathcounts" In February
Sixth, seventh and eighth graders from 18 Denver schools participated in the second round of the "Mathletics" cluster competitions on Wednesday, Jan. 11.
Mathletics is a Denver Public Schools competition designed to expand the depth and breadth of students' knowledge of math concepts. Competition consists of rounds in which students individually tackle a variety of math problems and a round during which teams of students work together.
The next competition, a district-wide contest for the all the teams that have been involved in this year's cluster competitions, is scheduled from 8:15 a.m. to noon Saturday, Jan. 21 at Henry Middle School (3005 S. Golden Way). About 170 students are expected to compete in that event.
The results from the Jan. 11 district qualifying competitions are:
At the competition hosted by Hill Campus of Arts and Sciences, sixth grade individual winners were Perrin Tourangeau from Hill Campus (first), Robert Harrington from Grant Middle School (second) and Sarah Pierce from Hamilton Middle School (third). The results of the sixth grade team competition were Hill Campus, first place; Grant Middle School, second place; and Hamilton Middle School and Merrill Middle School, tied for third. The seventh/eighth grade individual winners were Kosuke Yoshinaga from Slavens School (first), David Harrington from Grant Middle School (second) and Evan Webber from Slavens School (third). The results of the seventh/eighth grade team competition were Slavens School, first place; Grant Middle School Team A, second place; and Grant Middle School Team B, third place.
At the competition hosted by Morey Middle School, sixth grade individual winners were Sam Fink from Morey (first), Rajeev Vishwamitra from Morey (second), and Emma Thompson and Brad Pearlman, both from Morey (tied for third). The results of the sixth grade team competition were Morey Middle School, first place; Dora Moore K-8 School, second place; and Skinner Middle School, third place. The seventh/eighth grade individual winners were Jordan Shelton from Morey (first), Beau Brown from Morey (second), and Jordan Anthony and Thomas Tarver, both from Morey, (tied for third). The results of the seventh/eighth grade team competition were Morey Middle School Team A, first place; Morey Middle School Team B, second place; and Centennial K-8 School, third place.
At the competition hosted by Smiley Middle School, sixth grade individual winners were Richard Norwood from Smiley (first), Dominique Combs from Smiley (second), and William Smith from Park Hill K-8 School (third). The results of the sixth grade team competition were Smiley Middle School, first place; Rachel B. Noel Middle School, second place; and Park Hill School, third place. The seventh/eighth grade individual winners were Shannon Joyner from Smiley (first), Emma D'Orazio and Julia Ebert, both from Park Hill, (tied for second), and Taylor Williams from Smiley Middle School (third). The results of the seventh/eighth grade team competition were Park Hill School Team A, first place; Smiley Middle School Team B, second place; and Park Hill School Team B, third place.
At the competition hosted by Grant Ranch School, sixth grade individual winners were Dan Le from Grant Ranch (first), Sam Barthel and Ryan MacGilvray, both from Grant Ranch, (tied for second), and Kayla Mees from Grant Ranch School and Diego Vargas from Henry Middle School (tied for third). The results of the sixth grade team competition were Grant Ranch School, first place; Kepner Middle School, second place; and Henry Middle School, third. The seventh/eighth grade individual winners were Verl Vahabi from Henry (first), Matt Gomer from Henry Middle School (second), and Sergio Huizar from Kepner Middle School (third). The results of the seventh/eighth grade team competition were Henry Middle School Team A, first place; Grant Ranch School Team A, second place; and Henry Middle School Team B, third place.
