Joslyn K. Owens To Present At The 2005 International Mathematics Educational Conference In Beijing, China

Instructional Math Coach Joslyn K. Owens is attending the 2005 International Mathematics Educational Conference in Beijing, China as a mathematics delegate. The conference is made up of professionals from around the world who specialize in mathematics education. The 2005 U.S./China Joint Education Conference convenes Dec. 2 - 9.

Owens is the mathematics coach at Marrama Elementary School (19100 E. Bollling Dr.) and is a former East High School graduate. She has taught in Denver Public Schools for 26 years.

For over 40 years, People to People Ambassador Programs have concentrated on the development of substantive professional exchanges for a wide variety of professions to fulfill the mission of People to People International founder President Dwight D. Eisenhower. Professionals from different countries are brought together to discuss common interests and to enjoy personal and professional growth through the close interaction with their colleagues.

The mathematics delegation will include 20 to 30 participants from across the world. Owens will have the opportunity to represent Denver Public Schools to fellow North American delegates as well as Chinese counterparts. She will co-present at one of the breakout sessions along with a colleague, Dr. Shirley Leali from Weber State University in Utah. The presentation is entitled "SMARTER Planning for Academic Diversity."

The delegation will be participating in discussions on mathematics curriculum, mathematics teaching strategies, preparation of teachers of mathematics and assessment. There will also be an opportunity to make site visits to both elementary and secondary schools in Beijing.
