Olympian Snowboarder Chris Klug To Visit Cory Elementary School Wednesday, Nov. 9

At 10 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 9 Olympic snowboarder Chris Klug will visit Cory Elementary School to tell his inspirational story to fourth and fifth graders. He also will speak to them about the U.S. Olympic Spirit Cards Contest, which Cory students are participating in this year.

Klug is a two-time Olympian with many competitive credits to his name. He was the 2004 U.S. National Champion in Slalom and the U.S. National Champion in Parallel Giant Slalom in 2001. Klug received a life-saving transplant to rid himself of a rare liver disease in July of 2000 and was back on the slopes five months later at the World Cup, making him the first-ever American to compete in the Olympic Winter Games with an organ transplant.

Klug also is a member of Team DHL, a select group of Olympic and Paralympic medalists of the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Spirit Award. This group will serve as ambassadors for the DHL U.S. Olympic Spirit Card Contest, which encourages young Americans to learn about the Olympic Spirit.

As participants in the DHL U.S. Olympic Spirit Card Contest, Cory Elementary School students will be educated about the Olympics and the universal concept of Olympic Spirit. They will then enter the contest by drawing their interpretation of the Olympic Spirit.

Teachers will pick one winner basted upon creativity, originality, and understanding of the theme, "What does Olympic Spirit Mean to Me?" The winner from each school will compete to eventually win a grand prize of a trip to the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Spirit Awards ceremony in May, 2006 and have his or her spirit card framed and displayed at the USA House in Torino, Italy during the Winter Games.

Cory Elementary School is located at 1550 S. Steele St. The phone number is 303-744-2726.
