Mile High Youth Corps Launches "Reclaiming Our Future" Project To Provide Education And Job Training To At-Risk Latino Youth
Denver's Latino youth have a new option for getting the education and training they need to succeed in today's job market.
Mile High Youth Corps (MHYC), a local nonprofit youth development organization, has announced the launch of its new "Reclaiming Our Future" Project, which provides at-risk Latino youth with GED preparation classes, Job Readiness Training, and support services to help them succeed in the workplace.
"This program will help meet the growing educational needs of Latino youth in our community while providing local employers with qualified workers. It's a win-win. Mile High Youth Corps is proud to be a part of this initiative," said MHYC Executive Director Dr. Kelly Causey.
MHYC received a grant from the Department of Labor through the Latino Coalition for Community and Faith Based Initiatives to implement the Reclaiming Our Future Project. The project will provide services for 40 Latino youth ages 16-21 over the next year. The GED (Graduate Equivalency Degree) classes are currently open for enrollment. Classes are offered Monday - Thursdays from 1 to 5 p.m.
Each month, MHYC will also offer a two-week course on job preparation. The course helps youth assess their career interests, develop resumes, practice interviewing, search for jobs and improve their communication and conflict resolution skills. Once they have completed the course, MHYC staff members assist youth in finding jobs that match their interests and skills. The November Job Readiness Training course will begin on Monday, Nov. 28. Youth interested in the program should contact Sandra Pereda at 303.433.1206 or spereda@mhyc.net.
