Over 300 DPS Students Attend Colorado Construction Career Days Oct. 5-6 To Research Construction Careers

Over 300 DPS high school students will participate in the 2005 Colorado Construction Career Days at the Adams County Fairgrounds in Brighton from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday, Oct. 5 and 6.

The event gives students and educators firsthand knowledge about the construction industry through hands-on activities such as a nail hammering contest, designing a traffic circle, testing materials, making a sheet metal tote, wiring an electrical box, plumbing, surveying, troubleshooting equipment, and fastening drywall. Students will be assigned to an industry representative who will serve as their guide and resource for information for the duration of the event.

Colorado Construction Career Days was started to improve the image of the construction industry while providing high school students with an overview of the rewarding and diverse career opportunities available. Colorado contractors, engineers, architects and the state workforce centers have joined together to sponsor this event.

The field of construction offers a wide range of jobs and great opportunities for advancement. Projections indicate that the construction industry will need 250,000 new workers per year to meet future growth projections. At the same time, many skilled workers will be retiring with the average age of workers nationwide standing at 48.

Over 250 volunteers and 80 companies participated at Colorado Construction Career Days in 2004. Volunteers are needed to help setup and dismantle the event, assist at registration table, or with safety-related items, plus more. Those who would like to volunteer can contact Lee Blum at 303-388-2422 or email at lee@agccolorado.org.

The Adams County Fairgrounds is located at 9755 Henderson Rd., Brighton.
