Colfax Elementary School's Family Math Night "Getting To Know Everyday Mathematics" To Be Held Sept. 29
From 6-8 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 29 Colfax Elementary School will host its first of three Family Mathematics Nights. The theme will be "Getting to Know Everyday Mathematics."
The program is designed for parents of students from kindergarten through fifth grade to learn more about the way that Everyday Mathematics programs are presented to their children. The evening will begin in the school cafeteria, and then parents will disperse in groups and visit separate stations to learn about the math programs and how to become more involved with their child's education.
There also will be a musical presentation of song and dance by second and fifth graders. The song and dance was taught by music teacher Susan Miller and gym teacher Tom Barela. Pizza and refreshments also will be available.
Everyday Math is the district-wide elementary math curriculum. It is a program that was designed to teach children to incorporate math into everyday life by using situations and context that are relevant to daily life rather than teaching the skills and numbers in an isolated way. The curriculum also includes time for whole-group instruction, as well as small-group, partner or individual activities. These activities balance teacher-directed instruction with opportunities for open-ended, hands-on explorations, long-term projects, and ongoing practice. Throughout the Everyday Mathematics curriculum, students are encouraged to explain and discuss their mathematical thinking. Opportunities to verbalize their thoughts and strategies give children the chance to clarify their thinking and gain insights from others.
Future Family Literacy Nights will cover reading and writing skills.
Colfax Elementary School is located at 1526 Tennyson St. The phone number is 303-623-6148.
