Marrama & Colfax Elementary Schools Win Denver Public Library's Summer Of Reading Challenge; Colfax Celebration Is Friday, Sept. 2
Marrama and Colfax elementary school students are the top bananas for the Denver Public Library Summer of Reading 2005 school challenge. The library challenged Denver schools to increase their participation in the program with prizes going to the two top schools.
Marrama Elementary School won first place with an 84 percent increase in participation. While only 33 children participated in the program in 2004, 507 student readers signed up in 2005. To reward their efforts, the students will receive a pizza party and their very own dictionaries courtesy of sponsor First Book - Greater Denver. A date and time for a celebration is not yet set.
Colfax Elementary School came in second with a 79 percent increase in participation. This year 267 students took the challenge - a huge gain when considering only 15 participated in 2004. Colfax students will celebrate from noon to 3 p.m. Friday, Sept. 2. Students will enjoy story time and ice cream in their class rooms courtesy of Meadow Gold Dairy. Students also will receive dictionaries from First Book - Greater Denver. Colfax is located at 1526 Tennyson St. The school's phone number is 303-623-6148.
Over 22,000 children and teens participated in the Denver Public Library's Summer of Reading 2005. The programs are designed to help children increase their literacy skills, read with their families and learn and use their local public library. The Denver Public Library's Summer of Reading Program is over 90 years old.
