Jovenes Unidos And Superintendent Michael Bennet Partner To Work On Discipline Reform Within Denver Public Schools
Fourteen members of the youth organization Jovenes Unidos presented a copy of the widely publicized report Education on Lockdown - Ending the School to Jail Track to Superintendent Michael Bennet on Monday, Aug. 29 and received a pledge to work together on the issues it raises.
"You are the first group of students who has taken the time to sit with me to talk about these types of issues," said Superintendent Bennet, who offered a resounding "yes" to working with Jovenes Unidos on strategies for discipline reform within the Denver Public Schools.
Jovenes Unidos said it will work with the district to reduce the number of in-school tickets issued; share research specific to DPS in its report; help develop a student code of conduct; and develop district discipline options such as peer mediation, conflict resolution and restorative justice programs.
Superintendent Bennet said he welcomed the active participation of Jovenes Unidos - along with all other interested organizations and community members - in the development of the district's plan.
"Michael Bennet is not hesitant to take on greatly needed reforms," said Jovenes organizer Julieta Quiñonez. "It is gratifying to see that Jovenes Unidos and DPS are coming together to solve an issue that is negatively effecting so many students of color. We have already set up follow-up meetings with the district and are excited to get started."
