East High School Graduate One Of Two Students Nationwide Awarded $5,000 Marcia Page Scholarship For Mathematics And Science Excellence

Margaret Spearman, a 2005 East High School graduate, was awarded the first annual Marcia Page Scholarship sponsored by Texas Instruments. Spearman, who is attending Stanford University as a biology major this year, is one of only two recipients in the nation.

The Council of Great City Schools, a coalition of inner city schools dedicated to the improvement of educational quality, selected the two African-American female students who received the awards. Both winners of the $5,000 scholarship have just completed their senior year of high school in a district that is a member of the council.

The winners will be mentored by Marcia Page, Vice President of Public Affairs at Texas Instruments. "The mentorship that this year's winners will receive is what differentiates this award from others," said Henry Duvall, communications director for the Council of Great City Schools.

Spearman will meet the scholarship's namesake Marcia Page on Thursday, Oct. 20 in Atlanta, Ga., where she will attend the council's annual fall conference.

Duvall said that the winners of this year's award were the best of the best. Duvall reviewed 165 applications from 35 different school districts before choosing the winners.

Each applicant was required to have been accepted for enrollment at a four-year or five-year college or university to pursue a goal in mathematics, engineering, science or technology. In addition applicants submitted three letters of recommendation and an essay that described life challenges that they have faced as well as the reason for their decision to pursue a career in mathematics, science, engineering or technology.
