Secondary Reform Recommendations Discussed On April Edition Of "DPS Today"
The April 2005 edition of "DPS Today," the monthly television show about Denver Public Schools on Denver cable 8, features a discussion about secondary school reform.
On the show, CBS-4 reporter Anna Alejo interviews Rev. Lucia Guzman, co-chair of the Commission on Secondary School Reform, Chief Academic Officer Sally Mentor Hay and South High School principal Bill Kohut about the next steps to implement the commission's recommendations.
The report from the commission, presented to the Board of Education last month, proposed a series of significant changes. Among them: transforming high schools in Denver by increasing the degree of rigor in the coursework; making the learning experience relevant to students' lives, interests and future plans; and building "safe, respectful and caring" learning environments in which relationships are improved at all levels.
Among a series of widely discussed ideas, the 27-member commission urged a stronger role for principals, encouraging that they have the authority to select their own staff and directly manage their own budgets.
The show can be seen on Denver cable 8 every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday at 8 a.m.; every Friday and Saturday at 8:30 p.m.; and every Sunday at 1:30 p.m. throughout the month.
Denver stations 22 and 48 also re-broadcast "DPS Today." Channel 22 is the DPS channel on Comcast cable in Denver. Channel 48 is an ITFS microwave channel that is received only within all DPS facilities and delivered on cable channel 48 in the each classroom.
The show for the current month airs on channels 22 and 48 at 1 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays; 3:30 and 5 p.m. on Mondays; 8 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. on Tuesdays; 8 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. on Wednesdays; 8 a.m., noon, 12:30 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. on Thursdays; and 8 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. on Fridays. The previous month's show airs at 12:30 p.m. on Thursdays.
