Bonfils-Stanton Foundation Awards $200,000 To Denver Notables; DPS Board Member Among Those Honored
DPS Board Member Elaine Gantz Berman and her husband Dr. Steve Berman were among five Coloradoans honored Tuesday, March 29 with an award described as Colorado's "Nobel Prize."
The Bonfils-Stanton Foundation awarded three statewide prizes in Arts and Humanities, Community Service and Science and Medicine.
Winners, feted during a ceremony at the Westin-Tabor Center, include:
- Denver Art Museum Director Dr. Lewis Sharp (Arts and Humanities);
- Outgoing Denver Public Schools Board member Elaine Gantz Berman and husband and lettered pediatrician Dr. Steve Berman (Community Service);
- Husband and wife immunologists, Drs. John Kappler and Phillipa Marrack of National Jewish Medical and Research Center (Science and Medicine)
"Steve and I are deeply honored by this award and to be included among previous honorees who have done, and continue to do, so much for the Denver community," said Board member Elaine Gantz Berman.
The awardees were selected for their significant and unique contributions to Coloradoans. The only award program of its kind in Colorado, the Foundation grants awards of $25,000 for each category.
Additionally, Bonfils-Stanton Foundation Chairman J. Landis Martin announced the Foundation's Livingston Fellowship Program and its five inaugural recipients, each of whom will receive a $25,000 award.
The Livingston Fellowship awards are intended to recognize and strengthen the nonprofit sector in Colorado by investing in the professional growth, development, and potential of its leaders, now and for the future.
The five Livingston Fellows are:
- Susan Birch, Executive Director of the Northwest Colorado Visiting Nurse Association;
- Colleen Colarelli, President and CEO of Girls Inc. Metro Denver;
- Kevin Seggelke, President and CEO of the Food Bank of the Rockies;
- Jamie Van Leeuwen, Director of Development and Public Affairs of Urban Peak Denver;
- Chip Walton, Producing Artistic Director of the Curious Theater Company.
The fellowship awards carry the name of longtime Trustee and Chairman of the Foundation, Johnston Livingston. Mr. Livingston passed his Chairman's gavel to J. Landis Martin at the event. Martin, a Trustee for the Foundation since 1981, has provided leadership to the Board of Trustees since 2000.
