Arts Abound; Student Talent Showcased Citywide In Five Upcoming Events And Exhibits

DPS Middle And High School Art Exhibit

Thursday, April 21 Through Tuesday, May 10

The middle and high school art exhibit opens today at the Denver Public Library and runs through Tuesday, May 10. The reception is from 5 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 26 at the library. The awards ceremony is at 6 p.m. in the lower level conference area. Superintendent Jerry Wartgow will present the awards. Students were awarded first place, second place, third place, honorable mention and best of show in all media categories. Scholarships also were awarded to some of the seniors from local art schools.

There are over 300 works of sculpture, painting, ceramics, jewelry, drawings and mixed media pieces in the first-floor cases and on the 7th floor Vida Ellison Gallery. The library is free and open to the public except on Wednesdays.

Arts For All, A Celebration Of Dance

DPS is co-sponsoring a Celebration of Dance - a day of dance for each grade level (elementary students on Tuesday, middle school on Wednesday and high school on Thursday) from Tuesday, April 26 through Thursday, April 28 at the Colorado Convention Center. Two hundred students 0per day will receive dance instruction in at least five different styles (e.g., hip hop, salsa, jazz, ballet, etc.). This celebration is designed to bring awareness to National Dance Week and will culminate in a dance performance at 7 p.m. Friday, April 29 at South High School, 1700 E. Louisiana Ave.

Westside Salute To The Arts

The schools in southwest and northwest Denver will feature the visual and performing artwork of students in elementary, middle and high schools from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, April 30 at the Colorado Convention Center.

Create And Celebrate The Arts
Saturday, May 7
Denver School Of The Arts

On Saturday, May 7 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. the 73 schools in southeast and northeast Denver will present "Create and Celebrate the Arts," a community celebration of the arts at Denver Public Schools. The event will be held at the Denver School of the Arts, 7111 Montview Blvd.

The event will kick off at 10 a.m. with a fanfare of music and a presentation of art banners from every school represented. This will be followed by a day of concerts, dances, drama and art-making activities.

At noon a special event will honor arts supporters Superintendent Jerry Wartgow; Mayor John Hickenlooper (accepted by Maria Guajardo Lucero, Mayor's Office for Education and Children); Janet Montgomery, DPS Arts Coordinator; and Clark Strickland, Chair of the DPS Arts Resource Council.

The event will include the debut of a "Create and Celebrate" song, written by Dixie Lingler of Hamilton Middle School and a video on "Celebrating the Arts in the Denver Public Schools" by students in the video cinema program at the Denver School of the Arts.

Groups will perform all over the building, including Lowry Elementary Percussion, George Washington High School dance and drama, Smith Renaissance dancers and actors, Bruce Randolph Chamber orchestra, Hill Middle School Choir and the Columbine Elementary Hand bells.

"Art Caps" will be a made all day and there will be classes and demonstrations in music and art taught by our arts teachers. Draw with our art teachers, watch a high school student do air brush painting, make an art cap, join in our sing-a-long for Create and Celebrate, catch Shakespeare and musicals.

The event is free and open to the public. There will be food for sale on the back lawn at Denver School of the Arts at Montview and Olive from local eateries including Cold Stone Creamery, Chipotle, and Einstein Bagels. DSA parent groups will also be selling food items during the event.

Free parking and shuttle buses will be available from Hamilton Middle School, South High School, Montbello High School, Martin Luther King, Jr. Middle School, Bruce Randolph Middle School and East High School starting at 9:30 a.m. This event is being held to thank our community for their support of the passage of the 2003 mill levy. Thanks to this mill levy, DPS has brought back the arts in all of the elementary schools.
