Governor Owens To Present Carson Elementary School With 2005 Earth Day Elementary School Of The Year Award April 22
Governor Owens will visit Carson Elementary School at 9 a.m. Friday, April 22 to present the school with the 2005 Earth Day Elementary School of the Year Award.
First grade teacher Kerry Santambrogio nominated the school for the award based on a first through fifth grade student service learning science project to beautify the school's new landscape with a Colorado garden.
The students have been learning about compost and recycling lunch waste into worm food for compost boxes. They are graphing the amount of food waste collected to see what will not go into the landfill and are planning a garden that is native and will be drought hardy to conserve water.
Teachers Kerry Santambrogio, Susan Phillips and Sue Montgomery give up their lunch time twice a week every other week to work with the service learning students. On other days, students can be seen in the cafeteria collecting food waste to use for this project.
"We are very proud and excited that the Governor will be taking time out of his schedule to come to Carson to present this very special award," said Gwen Henderson-Gethers, principal.
Carson Elementary School is located at 5420 E. 1st Ave. The phone number is 303-355-7316.
