Wendy Woo, Local 33, The Reals, Toast, Xtended Version Set To Play "Tellerpalooza II" Saturday, May 21 At Mercury Café; Benefit Will Support Teller Elementary School
"Tellerpalooza II," an evening that will benefit Teller Elementary School - Congress Park neighborhood's best kept secret - will feature the best of the Denver music scene at the Mercury Café in downtown Denver. The event is Saturday, May 21, beginning at 6 p.m. Tickets are $15.
"Last year's Tellerpalooza was an enormous success that brought the broader community together to support Teller Elementary School, which is a hidden gem within Denver Public Schools," said PTSA President Michele Foust. "This year's line-up will provide an equally compelling array of musical talent, and we invite everyone to sample some great local entertainment at a great price and, in the process, help support a terrific school and its incredible staff."
The musical line up for 2005 includes:
- Wendy Woo. She has been named best singer/songwriter (1999, 2000, 2002 and 2003) and Best Nationally Undiscovered Artist and Best Acoustic Artist by the weekly newspaper Westword. Woo (www.wendywoo.com) has shared the stage with Sarah McLachlan and The Indigo Girls. She has opened for many national acts including Sheryl Crow, India.Arie, Counting Crows, Shawn Colvin, Dave Mason, Stanley Jordan, Eric Johnson, Karla Bonoff, Crash Test Dummies, Sonia Dada and Loudon Wainwright III.
- Local 33. "Four blue collar guys singing the plight of blue collar life with a sense of survivors' pride that suggests this is not just another factory processed alt-country act," said Westword. Local 33 (www.local33.net) just released (April 9) a new CD, "Hearts That Bend," described as "a grit-etched reminder of all that is pure, simple and honest about country and rock."
- The Reals. Their CD, "Majestic," earned the Reader's Choice award as best CD from Westword. One of Denver's most engaging live bands, The Reals have toured the western United States with their eclectic and original roots style. (www.thereals.net)
- Toast. The 10-year veteran outfit plays classic rock 'n roll. The band recently opened for Styx at the Olathe Sweet Corn Festival and has played the Bluebird Theater, Soiled Dove, Herman's Hideaway and various other Denver clubs. Twice Toast has played The Greenway Foundation's summer concert series at Confluence Park.
- Michael C & Xtended Version. This funk and rhythm and blues combo is well known for its ability to get a party jumping. Featuring Morey Middle School paraprofessional Michael C, the band covers everything from Cameo and Stevie Wonder to James Brown and Marvin Gaye.
"Tellerpalooza" also will feature performances by current Teller musicians and Teller "graduates" who now learn at Denver School of the Arts. Tickets are available by calling 303-598-0061. Tickets also will be available at The Mercury Café door, located at 2199 California St. in downtown Denver.
"Tellerpalooza" will benefit Teller Elementary School, 1150 Garfield St. Teller boasts a renovated, state-of-the-art facility where enrollment reflects Denver's cultural diversity.
