The Highland Merchants' Association and International Association for Astronomical Studies (I.A.A.S.) - North High School chapter - are proud to announce a "Night Under the Stars" at 8 p.m. Friday, April 15 at 32nd and Lowell in northwest Denver. The family event is free.
View baby stars being born, clusters of new infant stars, planets and close up views of strange but beautiful craters and mountain ranges on the surface of the Moon. Along with telescope viewing, there will be fun demonstrations. See what happens in the very vacuum of space, cryogenic temperatures of space travel and see the fingerprints of the stars.
I.A.A.S. - North High School is an organization of high school, college-aged and adult members based at North High School who are interested in the exciting world of science. North High School students recently have completed a major project to refurbish its unique collection of telescopes. In its 27-year history, the student members have built a research package for NASA, which flew aboard the space shuttle, assisted NASA in capturing the first radio signals from the Mars Global Surveyor spacecraft, built a very large telescope and are currently constructing a radio and optical observatory. The aviation team is also currently constructing a full scale WWI French fighter plane.
The I.A.A.S. is made up of various interest teams such as rocketry, aviation, optical and radio astronomy, radio science and communications. Their specialty is working with various schools and organizations in a multitude of educational and outreach programs and participating in research projects with universities and national/international agencies.
Part of the energy behind the young science buffs at North High School comes from Earth Force, a community organization. FrontRange Earth Force offers a program to engage youth as active citizens by providing training and on-going support in Service-Learning that connects meaningful community service experiences with academic learning.
Merchants and restaurants on the street will be open late, and many will have special offers. Come out and support North High School students in this academic showcase!
