The Henry Middle School revitalization committee has come to consensus to propose that the school become an official International Baccalaureate (IB) Middle Years Program (MYP). The committee will host a community meeting at 7 p.m. Monday, Feb. 7 in the school's auditorium to present the idea to the community and get feedback.
The MYP focuses on internationalism, community and service and is heavy on inquiry-based instruction in all subject areas. It also addresses the whole child in that each student takes eight subject areas: math, science, humanities (history and geography), language A, language B, physical education, the arts and technology.
Henry's revitalization committee will meet again on Wednesday, Feb. 9 to review the feedback and make any adjustments as necessary before presenting the proposal to the Board of Education in time for a decision in March.
To date, BROWN ELEMENTARY SCHOOL in northwest Denver and BRADLEY ELEMENTARY SCHOOL in southeast Denver both selected the International Baccalaureate (IB) Primary Years Programme. Bradley began implementing elements of the IB program this school year; Brown's program will start in August.
MONTCLAIR ELEMENTARY SCHOOL in southeast Denver will be transformed as the "Montclair School of Academics and Enrichment." The plan calls for implementation of the Early High Strides program as well as the Schoolwide Enrichment Model.
HENRY MIDDLE SCHOOL in southeast Denver will be reborn as the "Hill Middle School Campus of Arts and Science." The plan calls for a primary focus in two areas: infusion of state-of-the-art computer technology into all areas of student learning; and expansion and enrichment of the elective arts program and after-school enrichment and tutoring.
The Board of Education in March identified 13 schools eligible to tap $2.5 million targeted for the revitalization campaign that was envisioned under the 2003 mill levy election (a $20 million annual tax increase approved by voters).
Revitalization committee membership includes two to four individuals from each of these groups: parents of existing students; parents residing in the neighborhood but whose children do not attend the school; representatives from the school's staff, preferably one of whom is a member of the Collaborative School Committee; and non-parent community members.
The schools are Bradley, Brown, Ford, Gilpin, Montclair, Remington, Sabin and Stedman elementary schools and Cole, Henry, Hill, Martin Luther King, Jr. and Skinner middle schools. (Cole Middle School's ongoing reforms were started in 2002-2003.)
