East High School To Award Diplomas On Jan. 27 To Three World War II Veterans

At 4 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 27 East High School will conduct an extraordinary graduation ceremony to honor three local veterans who cut short their high school educations over 60 years ago to perform military service for the nation in the Second World War.

Mr. Glenn Heggen, Mr. Richard Fisher and Mr. Joseph Thomas will receive high school diplomas as part of Operation Recognition, which provides high school diplomas to Colorado veterans. The program is authorized by state law and is offered by the Colorado Board of Veterans Affairs in cooperation with the Colorado Department of Education and the Colorado Association of School Boards.

Mr. Heggen served in the Navy; Mr. Fisher served in the Army. Both served in three major wars - WWII, Korea and Vietnam. Mr. Thomas began his service in the Army Air Corp, forbearer of the Air Force, where he completed a lifelong military career as well.

"Denver's East High School is proud to retroactively bestow gradation honors on these men of the greatest generation," said Jane Wilson, the school's records secretary.

East High School is located at 1545 Detroit St. For more information, contact Jane Wilson at the school, 303-394-8300.
