Youth Leaders From Northwest Denver Attend Leadership Conference Jan. 27 To Discuss Community Problem Solving
Students from Edison and Remington elementary schools, Centennial K-8 School and Skinner Middle School will attend the Youth Voice United Conference for youth leaders in Northwest Denver from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 27.
Denver District 1 City Councilman Rick Garcia will be the keynote speaker, addressing students during lunch about the significance of youth voice, service-learning and civic engagement.
The theme of the conference is "Youth and Community Partners for Change." This is an opportunity for students who are taking on leadership roles within their schools to come together to: discuss community issues; interact with other student leaders; develop their leadership and problem solving skills; improve their academic and social skills; and get input from community organizations and community leaders on how to improve themselves and their communities.
"I learned that youth can help their community, not just grown ups!" said Amber Johnson from Skinner Middle School, who attended the conference two years ago. "Kids can make a difference."
Front Range EarthForce and YASCO (Youth as School and Community Organizers) are organizing the conference. Presenters include: students from Skinner Middle School; junior leaders from the Earth Walk after-school program; Earth Force staff; and Guerin Green (writer for the North Denver News).
The conference will be held at the Mile High United Way in the Founders Room, 2505 18th St., Denver. For more information, contact Adam Garbus at 303-433-0016 or garbus1979@yahoo.com.
