Kaiser Elementary School's Performance Rating On State's School Accountability Report Corrected To "Average"

Wayne Eckerling, Assistant Superintendent for Research, Planning and Special Projects, has announced that Kaiser Elementary School's academic performance rating on the state's 2004 School Accountability Report is "average," based on testing data from the 2003-2004 school year.

When the accountability ratings initially were published in early December, Kaiser was listed as "low" when, in fact, the school maintained the "average" rating it has had for the previous two years. (All schools are given one of five ratings by the state - excellent, high, average, low or unsatisfactory.)

The adjustment, Eckerling noted, is unrelated to the scoring of individual student performance on the Colorado Student Assessment Program (CSAP), upon which the school ratings are based. "The CSAP test scores of all individual students are accurate," said Eckerling. "Only the overall school rating was inaccurate."

The accountability ratings are based on individual scores on CSAP but determining the ratings includes a series of steps that exclude some groups of students. At Kaiser, some of those students inadvertently were included in the data that was sent to the state for its accountability rating analysis.

Scores sent to the state from a few other Denver schools also inadvertently included some student scores that should have been excluded, but Kaiser was the only school with a different accountability rating as a result. "The error was ours," said Eckerling, "and we've improved our internal systems to make sure it will not happen again."

"Kaiser is a wonderful school in a strong community, and we invite all community members to come and see the progress our students make each and every day," said principal Richard Sinclair.

Kaiser Elementary School is located at 4500 S. Quitman St. The school's telephone number is 303 795-6014.
