Commission On School Nutrition And Physical Activity Hosts Retreat On Friday, Nov. 12
The Commission on School Nutrition and Physical Activity will hold a retreat for members on Friday, Nov. 12 in the Columbine Room at the Garden of the Gods Club, 3320 Mesa Road in Colorado Springs.
The meeting will begin at 1 p.m. Friday and will conclude at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov 13. Top administrative staff are expected to attend including: Superintendent Jerry Wartgow; Andre Pettigrew, Assistant Superintendent, Administrative Services; and John Leslie, Assistant Superintendent, Student Services.
The attendees first will review the outline for the final report of recommendations and then will split into three study groups: food in schools; physical education and health education and future research. The Commission then will convene for a full group discussion and consensus on the final recommendations to be presented to the Denver Board of Education Thursday, Dec. 16.
The Commission on School Nutrition and Physical Activity was set up to propose recommendations to the Board of Education for nutritional standards and their implementation for all food and beverages in DPS schools and facilities, nutrition education for DPS students and appropriate outcome measurements. The commission is also charged with reviewing and revising, as necessary, DPS standards and implementation for physical education and determining the feasibility of its own recommendations as they pertain to costs, funding and sustainability; and
- Develop recommendations for nutritional standards and their implementation for all food and beverages available in DPS schools and facilities. (For example, school cafeterias, snack, and beverage vending machines.)
- Develop recommendations regarding nutrition education for DPS students.
- Review and revise, as necessary, DPS standards for physical education and recommend a plan for their implementation.
- Determine the feasibility of the recommendations as they pertain to the costs, funding, and sustainability.
- Develop recommendations regarding appropriate outcome measures.
