Smedley Elementary School To Hold "Colorado I Have A Dream" Adoption Ceremony For Third-Graders Tuesday, Nov. 9

Smedley Elementary School will celebrate the Colorado I Have a Dream Foundation adoption of 60 third-graders from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 9. The event will take place at the school, 4250 Shoshone St. The adoption is the foundation's ninth since 1988.

The night will include a dinner for students and their families and a live performance from a local mariachi band. After dinner each student will read an essay about their dream, symbolizing their induction into the program.

"This is such a great opportunity for our kids because some of these kids will be first-generation college graduates," said Mark Hernandez, principal. "The great thing about this program is that it will afford our students the opportunity to better the statistics for minority students in DPS."

About Colorado I Have a Dream Foundation

CIHAD was established in 1988 as a nonprofit organization with a mission to encourage the 100 percent high school graduation of at-risk students in Denver. The Foundation fulfills this mission by adopting classes of students (called Dreamers) that consist of entire grade levels from Denver elementary schools or entire age groups from Denver housing developments. After the classes are adopted in third grade, CIHAD stays with them through the completion of high school. When the Dreamers graduate, they receive a partial scholarship to attend the college or vocational school of their choice.
