'KIPP' Chosen For Cole Middle School; Superintendent Jerry Wartgow Supports Selection

The state Board of Education today unanimously selected the Knowledge is Power Program, also known as 'KIPP,' as the charter school operator to run Cole Middle School.

KIPP, which also runs Sunshine Peak Academy in Denver along with a national network of schools, will now negotiate a specific charter school contract with Denver Public Schools for Cole. The transition to charter school management is spelled out in the state's school accountability law, which mandates such a conversion for schools that fail to meet specific achievement benchmarks.

KIPP's application before the state Board of Education charter stated that it could not implement its program until the 2006-2007 school year.  However, the plan approved by the state requires that KIPP implement key features of its program in the 2005-2006 school year and be accountable for results.

"We're looking forward to working with KIPP," said Denver Superintendent Jerry Wartgow.  "KIPP has a good track record for student achievement in Denver and around the country.  We will work out the contract details and do our best to make a smooth transition for students, families and staff."

According to the KIPP website, there are 31 KIPP schools in 13 states and the District of Columbia.

"KIPP is proving through great teachers, longer hours, and a structured learning environment, the achievement gap in public education can be closed," the website states. "Students at KIPP are accepted regardless of prior academic record, conduct, or socioeconomic background. More than 80 percent of KIPP students qualify for the federal free and reduced-price meal program. KIPP schools start with a fifth-grade class and add one grade each year until they reach full capacity at approximately 320 students. At KIPP schools, there are no shortcuts - only hard work and high expectations. Each member of the school community - parents, students, and teachers - signs a 'commitment form' pledging to the quality work and long hours necessary for success."

Cole Middle School is located at 3240 Humboldt St.
