Harrington Elementary School Students Receive 2004 Solid Waste Management "Keep Denver Beautiful" Community Service Award Tonight

Carrie Symone's fourth-grade class from Harrington Elementary School will be honored at the Solid Waste Management "Keep Denver Beautiful" Community Service awards ceremony from 7 to 8 p.m. today (Tuesday, Nov. 16) at Norgren Hall in the Denver Zoo grounds.

Last year, Symone's third-grade class worked with Front Range Earth Force (a non-profit that helps students get excited about going to school by supporting service projects) to identify a community issue they wanted to address. The students chose graffiti.

After researching graffiti from multiple perspectives, the students decided to take action. The class wrote a letter describing what they did:

"We painted over some graffiti in a nearby alley with the help of a city organization called Denver Partners Against Graffiti. We had an assembly and a family night at our school to educate people about how to stop graffiti. We reached our goals because we accomplished what we set out to do. However, graffiti continues to be a problem. More people need to get involved in stopping graffiti. From this experience, we learned that it is important and fun to take care of our neighborhood. We learned that we can make the world a better place!"
