Enrollment Deadlines For 2005-2006 School Year Begin In December; January Is First Round Of Choice Enrollment Period

Now is the time to begin thinking about enrolling students for the 2005-2006 school year. Parent information nights began earlier this month, and the DPS "Got Kids? Got Choice!" school fair is from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 30 at North High school, 2960 N. Speer Blvd. The new 2005 enrollment guide will be available at the school fair.

DPS offers a wide variety of choices including neighborhood schools, magnets, charters and other schools and gifted programs for kindergarten through eighth-grade students with extraordinary academic needs, abilities and potential.

Enrollment Deadlines Begin Friday, Dec. 10, 2004

The enrollment deadline for Gifted and Talented education and middle and high school magnets is Friday, Dec. 10, 2004.

Magnet schools may emphasize a particular style of learning or serve students with a common area of interest. Each magnet school manages its own application process. Ask for application information from the magnet school that interests you. The deadline for all 2005-2006 middle and high school magnet applications is Friday, December 10, 2004. The deadline for all 2005-2006 elementary school magnet applications is Monday, January 31, 2005.

The district provides the Highly Gifted Magnet Program for first- through eighth-grade students with extraordinary academic needs, abilities and potential and an Advanced Kindergarten Program. The deadline for all 2005-2006 kindergarten, elementary and middle gifted and talented magnet applications is Friday, December 10, 2004. Applications are available in schools, online at http://gt.dpsk12.org or from the Gifted and Talented Education Department at 303-405-8272.

Choice Enrollment Is January 3-31, 2005

If you are interested in a school other than your neighborhood school, Choice allows you to apply for a transfer to another neighborhood school. For the best chance of securing a seat for your child in another school, completed enrollment forms for the 2005-2006 school year need to be returned by Monday, January 31, 2005. Beginning January 3, 2005, choice forms are available at all schools. Forms may be returned to any school for central processing. A lottery will be conducted if there are more applicants than space available in a school. Families will receive acceptance letters or waiting list notification by mid-February.

After January 31, 2005, you will need to return Choice forms to the specific school or schools that interest you. These may be completed through mid-August 2005. Students are enrolled during this second round of the Choice process on a first-come, first-served basis. Waiting lists are maintained for schools with more applicants than space available.

DPS also offers charter schools and other choices such as the Rocky Mountain School of Expeditionary Learning and online education. Charter schools manage their own applications. Charter schools and other choices will be outlined in the 2005 enrollment guide (available at the Nov. 30 school fair or by calling the DPS Welcome Center in December at 720-423-3970).
