Artistic Expressions Across Southeast Denver Throughout November

Exhibits of student art are turning up around southeast Denver and students are winning art and poster contests - a direct result of the $20 million mill levy election in November 2003. The largest component of the mill levy election was $6.5 million for new arts and music teachers for elementary schools.

Students from Montclair Elementary School (1151 Newport St.) will be honored at the 2004 Outstanding Community Service Awards ceremony on Tuesday, Nov. 16 at the Denver Zoo for their contributions to the "Keep Denver Beautiful - Make A Difference Day" poster contest. Montclair fifth-grader Brenda Solis took first place and fourth-grader Atuchi Nwankwo took third place.

Students from both Montclair and Ashley elementary schools will be designing holiday cards for Janus Funds. In turn, Janus is donating $2,500 to each school. Ashley Elementary School is located at 1914 Syracuse St.

Artwork by students at Bromwell Elementary School (2500 E. 4th Ave.) is on display through Thursday, Nov. 25 at Java Creek, 287 Columbine St.

Students from Hamilton Middle School will have an art show on display at Tamarac Square from Monday, Nov. 15 through Monday, Nov. 29.

"All of our teachers are working very hard with our communities to increase the visibility of what students are producing," said southeast area arts specialist Julia Shepherd. "We are working on exhibits in a variety of public venues."
