The "Mike Shanahan Fantasy Playground" will be dedicated at 2 p.m. Friday, Oct. 8 at McGlone Elementary School, 4500 Crown Blvd. in Montbello. Members of the Denver Broncos, Phil Long dealerships, Lowes Home Improvement and the Mayor's office all are expected to attend.
Later in the month, five Learning Landscape dedications also are scheduled:
- Wednesday, Oct. 20 - Philips Elementary School, 6550 E. 21st Ave. at 9:15 a.m.
- Friday, Oct. 22 - Edison Elementary School, 3350 Quitman St. at 3 p.m. (Mayor John Hickenlooper is expected to attend.)

- Wednesday, Oct. 27 - Barrett Elementary School, 2900 Richard Allen. Ct. at 10 a.m.
- Thursday, Oct. 28 - Southmoor Elementary School, 3755 S. Magnolia Way at 9:15 a.m. (Mayor John Hickenlooper is expected to attend.)
Learning Landscapes include a playfield, age-appropriate equipment, gardens, trees, non-traditional play features, shade structures and a gateway to the neighborhood. The objectives of the initiative include reducing discipline issues on school grounds, providing better physical education and resources for classroom projects, establishing a gathering place for neighborhood families and strengthening neighborhood-school partnerships.
The five Learning Landscapes being dedicated in October all were funded through the $310 million general obligation bond approved by voters in November 2003.
The McGlone Elementary School and community playground is the ninth fantasy playground built since the project began in 1996, and is made possible through the Denver Broncos Charities Fund and the Phil Long Community Fund "Fantasy Playground" program with Denver Public Schools.
McGlone's new playground is unique in that it is comprised of four play pits, each designed for different levels of child play beginning with the "Early Childhood Education Pit," followed by the "Primary Play Pit," "Intermediate Play Pit" - and finally the "Swings Pit." The latest state-of-the-art playground equipment is being used in the build, which will take four to five thousand volunteer hours to finish. It will be the largest playground in the DPS system.
