Two Learning Landscapes To Be Dedicated This Week - Barrett Elementary School On Wednesday, Oct. 27 And Southmoor Elementary School On Thursday, Oct. 28

Barrett and Southmoor elementary schools will dedicate their new Learning Landscapes this week.

Barrett Elementary will hold its dedication at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 27. Mayor John Hickenlooper will participate in the Southmoor Elementary School dedication at 9:15 a.m. on Thursday, Oct. 28.

The Barrett dedication will include brief comments, a singing of the school song and two students will read poems written for the ceremony. The students will then have and opportunity to play on their new Learning Landscape.

The Southmoor dedication will spotlight various events. After the opening comments, the News 4 helicopter will land on the upper field to deliver "Mr. Moose" to the dedication. The dedication will then include brief remarks from the Mayor and attending contributors, a ribbon cutting ceremony and students from each grade level will read their essays about the new Learning Landscape. The dedication will end with the "Southmoor Stomp" and then students will be released to play on the new landscape.

"The transformation is really remarkable," said Anita Theriot, principal at Southmoor. "Our Learning Landscape will now be an extension to learning by providing an alternative to the inside classroom."

Learning Landscapes include a playfield, age-appropriate equipment, gardens, trees, non-traditional play features, shade structures and a gateway to the neighborhood. The objectives of the initiative include reducing discipline issues on school grounds, providing better physical education and resources for classroom projects, establishing a gathering place for neighborhood families and strengthening neighborhood-school partnerships.

The Learning Landscapes being dedicated this fall were funded through the $310 million general obligation bond approved by voters in November 2003.
