This Week's Revitalization Committee Meetings
The work of revitalization committees in 13 schools is well underway. Committees continue to meet to develop plans to increase student achievement and boost the attractiveness of their schools to the community. Some schools are implementing new programs this school year (2004-2005), while others will need a year of planning to get ready.
This week's revitalization committee meetings are:
BRADLEY ELEMENTARY SCHOOL
6:30 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 26 at the school, 3051 S. Elm St.
FORD ELEMENTARY SCHOOL
3 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 27 at the school, 14500 Maxwell Place
HILL MIDDLE SCHOOL
6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 27 at the school, 451 Clermont St.
MONTCLAIR ELEMENTARY SCHOOL
6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 27 at the school, 1151 Newport St.
Revitalization efforts are well underway at Montclair Elementary in southeast Denver. While the school's Revitalization Committee has been meeting since early September, a formal, community wide kick-off and fundraiser was held on Thursday, Oct. 14 at the Mingle for Montclair. A group of neighborhood volunteers coordinated the event held at the home of Revitalization Committee member Scott Hamling. Over $2,000 was raised in a strong show of support for the school. Revitalization efforts continued the weekend of Oct. 22 with the completion of a community-wide survey coordinated by the University of Colorado at Denver and conducted by committee members, community volunteers and teachers. With this information, the committee will make a recommendation to the Board in December defining Montclair Elementary School's plan for revitalization.
REMINGTON ELEMENTARY SCHOOL
Community meeting 4:15 to 6 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 26; community forums 9 to 11 a.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 28 at the school, 4735 Pecos St.
The Board of Education in March identified 13 schools eligible to tap $2.5 million targeted for the revitalization campaign that was envisioned under the 2003 mill levy election (a $20 million annual tax increase approved by voters).
Revitalization committee membership includes two to four individuals from each of these groups: parents of existing students; parents residing in the neighborhood but whose children do not attend the school; representatives from the school's staff, preferably one of whom is a member of the Collaborative School Committee; and non-parent community members.
The schools are Bradley, Brown, Ford, Gilpin, Montclair, Remington, Sabin and Stedman elementary schools and Cole, Henry, Hill, Martin Luther King, Jr. and Skinner middle schools. (Cole Middle School's ongoing reforms were started in 2002-2003.)
