Hill Middle School To Host Parent/Student Information Night On Wednesday, Oct. 27

Hill Middle School will host a parent and student information night at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 27. Students and parents will stay together throughout the evening.

At 6:30 p.m., principal Don Roy will address attendees, giving them an overview of the school environment. A parent member of the school's revitalization committee will provide a brief summary of efforts to develop plans for increasing student achievement and boosting the school's attractiveness to the community. (The Board of Education in March identified 13 schools eligible to tap $2.5 million targeted for the revitalization campaign that was envisioned under the 2003 mill levy election - a $20 million annual tax increase approved by voters).

From 7 to 8 p.m., attendees will tour the school in small groups. All rooms will be accessible, but tours will feature the Honors Program, four state-of-the-art technology labs, electives, athletics, character education and "Teaching With Love and Logic."

The evening will wind down between 8 and 8:30 p.m. with final questions.

Hill Middle School opened its doors in 1955 and is located in the Hilltop/Crestmoor neighborhood. Because of its location next to a greenbelt, many science and language arts classes are held outside.

The school offers an application-based Honors Program for high achieving students. The program provides three years of algebra, three years of foreign language, accelerated classes in reading writing, science and social studies. The program prepares students well for Advanced Placement classes in high school. The instruction in algebra and foreign language enables students to apply to International Baccalaureate (IB) programs as well.

Technology is a key component of the Hill curriculum, with four state-of-the-art computer labs and a wireless laptop research center enabling teachers to fully incorporate computer skills with core academics. Science and math concepts are further explored by data manipulation, engineering and product design (in conjunction with the woodshop). Students learn web design, PowerPoint, even film making.

Hill Middle School utilizes the Intouch system enabling parents to access their student's grades, attendance and assignments via the internet.

"At Hill, we recognized students learn at different levels," said Roy. "Beginning in 2004, we began an intensive focus on helping all of our students learn to their optimum potential. The primary focus is on disciplinary literacy, where curriculum is combined with opportunities for each student to fully explore and understand the concept presented. CSAP style rubrics are used to provide students guidelines for success. Our goal is to advance school-wide test scores by providing each student at Hill with the best possible learning tools for each student."

Beyond the core curriculum, Hill offers a full range of electives including, PE, art, choir, guitar, band, photography, woodshop and advanced computers to name a few.

The school has a large green field with a baseball diamond, additional space for soccer and football, two outdoor tennis courts and a blacktop space for basketball, jump rope and foursquare.

Hill Middle School is located at 451 Clermont St. For more information, contact the school at 303-399-0254.
