DPS Awarded $453,512 From Carol M. White Physical Education Grant To Fund "On The Move" Program Promoting Physical Education

Denver Public Schools has been awarded the Carol M. White Physical Education Grant of $453,512 from the U.S. Office of Safe and Drug-Free Schools to help fund its "On the Move" physical education program enabling students to meet Colorado state standards for physical fitness. Only 237 awards were given this year out of 1,315 eligible applications received.

The "On the Move" program offers structured and sequential physical and nutritional education curriculum for students attending certain DPS schools. "On the Move" trains educators at 20 middle and four K-8 schools in contemporary classroom strategies.

"The grant will significantly impact the physical education program we offer to middle school students," said Eric Larson, DPS Physical Education Coordinator. "The goal is for students to develop knowledge and practices necessary in obtaining personal physical fitness and lifetime wellness values."

Funding will provide equipment, curriculum and professional development, including the DPS Physical Education and Dance Summer Institute.

"On the Move" allows students to maximize the time they spend being physically active in activities that are inclusive and accessible to all participants regardless of initial fitness level or physical ability. On the Move prioritizes personal fitness, health and nutrition planning and improves the evaluation process for individual student progress and staff involvement.
