Superintendent Wartgow On Hand Wednesday, Aug. 11 For Ninth Annual Dictionary Distribution To All Third-Grade Students

For the ninth year in a row, third-graders in DPS will receive a dictionary and a thesaurus of their own courtesy of the Inter-Neighborhood Cooperation's Dollar Dictionary Drive.

Superintendent Jerry Wartgow is slated to be the keynote speaker during this year's dictionary drive celebration at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 11 at Colfax Elementary School, 1526 Tennyson St. The Sloan's Lake Citizen's Group and Inter-Neighborhood Cooperation representatives will join Superintendent Wartgow.

This year's dictionary also includes world maps, the U.S. Constitution and Declaration of Independence, presidential biographies, state and country information and pictures and descriptions of the planets.

Inter-Neighborhood Cooperation (INC), a consortium of Denver neighborhood organizations, created the Dollar Dictionary Drive in 1996 to provide a personal dictionary and thesaurus to every third-grade student DPS elementary schools. Each year since 1996, 8,000 third-grade students attending Denver Public Schools have received these valuable resource tools to use in the classroom and at home. These are two books of their own available to each student year after year in their quest for literacy and knowledge.

The cost for both these gifts from the community is $2.50 per student. This is a great value and provides a life-long tool for each third-grader's education and future success. Donations have come from businesses, neighborhood organizations and individuals. All money donated goes toward the purchase of dictionaries and is tax deductible. Contributions can be sent to Inter-Neighborhood Cooperation, Dollar Dictionary Drive, PO Box 18347, Denver, CO 80218.

For more information, contact the Elizabeth Hamilton, INC chair, at 303-290-1916 or Cathee Fisher, dictionary co-chair, at 303-333-3141.
