Baker Middle School Teachers To Visit Students' Homes

For the second year in a row, teachers from Baker Middle School will visit students' homes starting at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 18 and Thursday, Aug. 19 and also from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 20.

A team of two teachers will visit every student registered at Baker. The visits take about 30 minutes and are scheduled during student registration. The idea is to connect the students family with the school, creating a stronger sense of community.

The first day of school for all early childhood education, elementary, sixth-grade and ninth-grade students is Monday, August 16. The next day - Tuesday, August 17 - is the first day of school for all other middle and high school students.

"Last year, teachers and parents gave tremendously positive reviews of the value and effectiveness of home visits," said Baker principal Linda Torres. "After the visits, parents told me that they knew what was expected of themselves and of their student. They could tell that the teachers care about and are very interested in their son or daughter. They felt like they got to know the school more and felt the visits were beneficial because they had the opportunity to see what the teacher's plans were for the school year."

Time at the homes is spent chatting about school policies and classroom procedures, learning about parent concerns and the individual child, and setting goals for the upcoming school year.
