Traditional School Year Starts Today; Back-To-School Nights Begin Tonight
Back-to-school nights are a great way for parents to meet teachers and staff at their childs school and to get information about the school, curriculum and classroom expectations. Listed by date below are some of the back-to-school nights scheduled in Denver Public Schools.
The traditional school year begins today. The first day of school for early childhood education, elementary, sixth-grade and ninth-grade students is today (Monday, Aug. 16). Tuesday, Aug. 17 is the first day of school for all other middle and high school students.
Beach Court Elementary School, 4950 Beach Ct., 303-455-3607
Back-to-school night will be held from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Monday, Aug. 16. Cookies and punch will be served. Students and families are invited to attend this special event to meet the Beach Court teachers and attend special presentations in their childs classroom. The contents of these special presentations will include classroom expectations, Literacy Block, Everyday Math and upcoming special events.

Smedley Elementary is hosting its first back-to-school week for the families and community. Tuesday, Aug. 17 is literacy day. Parents are invited to the classrooms to observe how the students participate in Readers and Writers Workshop. During their classroom/lab visits, parents will receive handouts from classroom teachers on specific reading/writing strategies to use at home. The purpose of the day is to involve the families in the learning practices of their children. Teachers will be expected to stop, model and explain their instructions to the parents. Again, parents can come during any time of the day because teachers' responsibilities are to teach literacy all day. Thursday, Aug. 19 is math day. Parents are invited. Teachers will model EDM games and focus on the home links that parents need to know to practice at home. Every parent will receive a math game to take home that day. The teachers' role is to teach EDM math the entire day. At noon, parents are invited to have a free lunch with the principal in the cafeteria. The menu includes ravioli, salad and dessert. So far over 300 parents have RSVP'd for the event. After the lunch, parents will return to the classrooms for more training. On Friday, Aug. 20, the entire Smedley community will celebrate the week at a Rockies Game beginning at 7:05 p.m. On Saturday, Aug. 21, the school's annual Community Walk will take place at 9 a.m. The entire Smedley staff will deliver backpacks to every student's home.

Back-to-school night will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 19. The event will take place at the school and all families are invited to attend and visit a classroom. Teachers will present information about school expectations and instructional programs. After attending the class presentation, each person will be given a ticket for the BBQ that follows. The ticket will also be used to enter a raffle for a set of school supplies per grade level.

Del Pueblo will have back-to-school night from 4 to 6 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 19. All parents and guardians are invited and the theme will be: Instructing Parents on Instruction. From 4 to 4:45 p.m. parents will view a presentation on the first year with literacy program, an overview of the second year with Everyday Mathematics, Time to Teach Discipline program, and review of the parent compact. Parents will visit classrooms from 4:45 to 5:45 p.m. where they will be introduced to classroom libraries, areas for independent reading, mini-lessons, attribute charts and work out an actual Everyday Mathematics problem in the content strand of algebra. Cookies and refreshments will be served in the lunchroom from 5:45 to 6 p.m.

The school is hosting a back-to-school night and carnival from 5 to 6 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 19. The carnival will run from 6 to 10 p.m. and will include food, prizes, games and a raffle! This is a major fund raising event for Rosedale.
