Students at Jessie Whaley Maxwell Elementary School will celebrate a year of reading at the Second Annual Literacy Carnival on Tuesday, June 8. Children in Early Childhood Education through second grade will have their celebration from 9:15 to 11:15 a.m. Grades three through five will hold their celebration from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m.
Over the year students at Maxwell have earned one “Dolphin Dollar” (the Dolphin is the school’s mascot) for every 10,000 words read. Students can use the Dolphin Dollars to participate in the 25 activity booths, which will be set up on the outside playground during the carnival.
The booths will provide a variety of challenges for the students, ranging from wheel of fortune, tic-tac-toe, school supply booth, estimation table, bean bag toss and books for sale table.
Many volunteers across the district will assist the Maxwell paraprofessional and support staff in operating the carnival.
Donations from the Montbello community businesses and various individuals are combined to make this end-of-the-year literacy activity a success.
The carnival ties into the second year of the Million Words Campaign, which challenges all DPS students to read at least one million words during the school year.
Maxwell Elementary School is located at 14390 E. Bolling Dr. For more information, contact the school at 303-576-6557.
