Educators Recognized At Black Education Advisory Council’s Summit

Four Denver Public Schools educators were presented certificates of recognition for their efforts on behalf of African-American students at the Black Education Advisory Council's (BEAC) education summit on Saturday, May 22.

Tamara Rhone (East High School), Marcia Pointer (Manual High School), Ethel McNeal (Montbello High School) and Dr. Irma Anthony (manager of Social Work Services) were honored for their outstanding advocacy for students. Nomination letters lauded their tireless efforts to help students apply for scholarships, obtain supportive services and achieve academic excellence. Denver Board of Education member Kevin Patterson presented the awards.

The BEAC Summit was attended by various representatives of the Denver community, including students, teachers, parents, school administrators and concerned community members. A panel of high school students from East, George Washington and Montbello high schools gave a thought-provoking presentation for the opening address.

During lunch, Montbello High School senior Clavin Wright performed a stirring dramatic piece. Clavin is the 2004 Gold Medal winner in drama in the Denver NAACP ACT-SO talent competition. He will represent Denver in Philadelphia at the national NAACP ACT-SO competition.

The recommendations generated by the work groups at the summit will be submitted to the Denver Board of Education and made available to the public as a part of BEAC's community education effort.
