Asbury Elementary School To Unveil Two Murals On Wednesday, May 26

Asbury Elementary School will unveil two new murals - one in the lunchroom and another on the west side of the school - at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, May 26.

Students in the school’s art club (taught by Jennifer Werner and Courtney Claussen) worked throughout the year using tiles to create the mural in the lunchroom. The tiles are hand collaged with relief print making.

“The lunchroom was selected as the display site because the students felt it would brighten up the lunchroom and all students would be able to see the tiles,” said principal Janet Box.”

Students, staff and community members designed the mural on the retaining wall on the school’s west side (along Marion St.) and painted it on Saturday, May 15.

“We brainstormed ideas through our Character Education classes,” said Box. “We conducted surveys to find the words that best describe our school, and those words are incorporated into the artwork.”

Jennifer Werner and Nancy Holtgraves headed up the Character Education classes.

Plans are in place to continue the outdoor mural next year; the school hopes to eventually reach Evans Ave.

Asbury Elementary School is located at 1320 E. Asbury Ave. For more information, contact the school at 303-722-4695.
